Watched game on Sunday. It's the inevitability of the result that depressess me. When a less talented side play a talented side, the less talented players run round at 90 mph to compensate. Our lot don't do that. So many of them go MIA. Where's the anger, where's the determination. If we don't have the talent, at least lob in a whole bunch of hi balls to Gested. It's not subtle, but it's what we've got. We have the weakest midfield I've ever seem in the Prem. Sherwood was right. We needed experienced British based players, Vertout, Gil have skill but no physical presence, Westwood just ain't Prem standard.

Thank God I emigrated, or I'd still be paying good money to watch this.

I see Gabby as starting alongside Gestede up front against Sunderland. Ideally Tim would love that partnership to pay dividends. If it doesn't this weekend, Sherwood needs to look at other alternatives. Why buy Ayew if he's not up to it and Sinclaire knows where the back of the net is.

Sunderland game is a big game for Gabby. He really needs to prove he's still got it, we can't hold players like Adams back!

I agree with what you are saying mate but Gabby has been at the club for 10 years +, it is also the club he supports, so to prove he has still got it is a bit late for me, he hasn`t had it for 3 years.
In my opinion he is a very poor excuse for a premiership footballer, if you can`t produce the goods for the club you love you have no chance, I truly believe that it is pace and pace alone that has got him through his career, and to call him a legend is a joke.
A football legend is a player who hasn’t just played for the club, but is someone who gave there all towards Aston Villa Football Club and wore the Claret and Blue shirt with pride.
To be honest I do blame the management at VP over the past few years for continuing to pick him, so I am hoping that Tim will see sense and do the best thing for Aston Villa and drop him now, I just hope making him Captain does not get in the way !

I just roll my eyes and shake my head when I hear people talk about big games for Gabby or how he has another chance to prove himself
As Viiladave says, he hasn't done it for years now
This is one dead horse we should just stop flogging
(Unless we could flog him to Albion for 5 million, for a laugh. )
Gabby is never going to do it now. Let's accept it, get him out of the side and move forward

The weaknesses have been described well here, but I don't see the of needlessly buying players. Gil shouldn't be forgotten and Sanchez is a pretty good enforcer.

If Benny stays, I'd like to see money spent on a quality goal scorer who can partner him.

So let's not get sentimental over the FA Cup or other results, remember, we were 3 points from being a Championship side. Under Sherwood at the tail end of the season we've had some great results, West Brom, Liverpool. West Ham and Spurs. At the same time, including the FA Cup. Burnley and Southampton, we shipped in 11 goals. I have to be honest, I've been watching the FA Cup final since I was a kid, and to my memory. That was the most one sided cup final I can remember, and that's a lot of cup finals.

I'm not inclined to let Timbo off the hook so easy. He picked the side and it never looked like a side that could compete against Arsenal . Grealish, Cleverley and Zoggy in midfield with Westwood behind them was a joke. The only true competitor in the middle of the park was Delph, and it wasn't his best of days either. I love Grealish's potential but he's ,19 and he ain't there yet. Zoggy has always been one good game one lousy game at the best. I'm not saying we should be won. But I'm am saying we should've made a fist of it!

to be fair i can't think of a team involving any of our players that wouldn't have got battered, only player that i thought had a half decent game was richardson,

im yet to see nzogbia play a good game in a villa shirt

I agree with bigc.
That midfield was terrible. Why didn't we play Ronald's, bale and messie?

Oh yeah, I remember, THAT IS ALL WE HAVE!!

The best thing to do is to stop dwelling on the final and judging or players solely on that game. Everything conspired against us, Arsenal were on fire, they had virtually no injuries to the squad, Sherwoods tactics could have been better (although options were limited), and the players collectively had an off day. When we were getting the good results Delph and Cleverley were running constantly, driving the midfield forward, and dropping deep to defend, plus creating most of the play. And Delph was rightly lauded by some as the best English midfielder around. But that style of play must be very draining on players and not a sustainable way of playing for a whole season. let's see who Sherwood sells and buys and maybe we will see him more prepared to adjust tactics mid game as he trusts all the players at his disposal to play his way.

Cleverley is the new Ray Wilkins. Worth keeping if the price's right.

If only to sell him on in January and make a profit.

Villa4Eva will not lose his 50 quid. We'll be well and truly spanked by City. Are there any positive from going to Wembley? Well I hope Nyland keeps his place, he deserves, he got us there. I hope to see Samata upfront, there's a lack of alternatives so that's a certainty. I'd like to see Davis given no less than 30 minutes at Wembley if fit. I'd love to see Vassilev get in on the action too and as an 18-year-old experience playing at Wembley.

The downside's obvious. We'll be lucky to escape with a 5.0 thrashing. That might affect confidence for the rest of the season. Our priority should be to stay up. There's a danger of injuries.

Wouldn't it be great to get a result though!

Getting Samba in defence means we can utilise Amivi on the wing, which he's very capable of.

My only criticism of Bruce is that he bought a bunch of new players, then three the newbies on straight away. It backfired. They hadn't had time to develope a workinv relationship. Having said that, these results are shocking and we just don't look like a determined professional side at all. Too many changes too fast, even though he's bought some great players!

The whole blame Gabby for everything is a distraction from the real problem, no midfield! Oh its snowing damn it that's Gabby again.

Some great posts. Yes Shringham and McCallister both did Brilliant jobs for whoevr the played for while in their thirties, as does Robbie Keene and remember Big Cyril. Basically we need an experienced quality forward.

Not really. Huddleston's injured and is staying put. Who knows about the French left back. I would've pushed harder for Austin or Vardy. We need goals! Like the signing of Richards though!

Yeah that's the midfield quality we need. We're part of the way there. Delph, Sinclair's Gil, three players of excellent quality. Sanchez as a holding midfield shield in front of the defence. The new boy Richards. Clark and Bennet have come along well. Needs Sherwood to get over his problem with Gil. I think Gil's a goal scorer, but even if Benny stays we need a Charlie Austin to run alongside him. If he goes, then two quality strikers. Problem is Lerner won't sanction any big cheques. We need the club sold ASAP. That doesn't seem to be happening.

Even with existing squad, we should finish around mid table next season. Worried over Gil situation. Don't want another bomb squad emerging, even if its just one player. Gil should be involved. Its inexplicable that he's not.
