Latest rumour is our owners will give Unai Emery a £200 million budget in the summer providing 2 conditions are met. Firstly we qualify for the Champions League and secondly we sell Douglas Luiz. Interesting if true.

Anyone with an accountancy qualification care to square this rumour with FFP rules? I understood we were having to sell players to comply so how can we spend £200m on new players. Sorry if I’m being thick

Menace, I think the additional £100 million is largely based on a number of assumptions. Firstly if we finish 4th we get just shy of £38 million in prize money, we also get circa £16 million just for qualifying for the Champions League, when the draw is made we get another million so that takes us to £55 million then for every win in the group stage you get £3 million plus a further £10 million if you get to the last 16. Any shortfall would be made up from TV revenue plus commercial spin offs from CL qualification. What I don’t get though is if our wage bill is near the UEFA ceiling how by selling just one player and getting his wages off the books will allow us to buy 3-4 quality recruits whose combined salaries were will surely be way more than what we save from taking one large earner off the books and therefore exceed the 90% threshold. That’s why I think the whole summer will be interesting in terms of what we do going forward.

I think the wage thing is a load of rubbish lotm, we are nowhere near some of the clubs in regard to the wage bill, there are teams out there who pay 4 or 5 players the equivalent of our whole team. I think if we qualify for champions league and win the conference along with selling a few players excluding the likes of luiz and Watkins etc we won’t be in a bad position.
It will be an interesting summer for sure, god only knows what plans NSWE have. I think a lot of these reporters are playing the guessing game

I don’t think it is rubbish Whack, the article I referred to in my previous post made it clear that to play in Europe we cannot spend more than 90% of our income on salaries. We generated £217 million last year 90% of that is circa £195 million. We actually spent £190 million so we don’t have a lot of headroom to play with. Interestingly I caught the end of a discussion on TalkSPORT where they were identifying the clubs most at risk from profitability and sustainability rules and we were in that list.

Ah ok I get you now, it’s 90% of our income, I thought you were saying UEFA have a ceiling for wages and every club has the same, that makes sense then. ?

Then we definitely need to sell more than one player if we are to recruit a couple, all I keep hearing though is the club have a business plan and it’s going the way they want, maybe part of it is player sales but I do have a feeling that the board have cards to play that we don’t know about.

It’s all bs though to be fair, we haven’t spent ridiculous amounts on any player, we have built a team that can compete with the top teams but UEFA and the premier league want to keep their boot on our heads, our owners are mega rich there is no risk of our club going under, there should be some kind of system where owners have to put X amount of money in a pot that can’t be touched unless the club needs it to stop it going into administration.

I do fear if we sell luiz or Watkins, it will set us back 2 or 3 years at least, unless we can do a Brighton and find really good players for knock down prices.

Good thread for me personally I'd sell Kamara who cost nothing and Ramsey who also cost us nothing and Digne who is one of the highest paid this should get us near 80 million and with other revenue should give us circa 100 million hopefully that will be enough to help with restructuring.

I think digne doesn’t get enough credit, I think we are better with him on the field, he is on high wages though. both kamara and Ramsey seem to be quiet injury prone so if it meant keeping our main guys I’d happily let them go, surely they would be worth the bones of 100k between them?

I prefer Digne to Moreno but I think he's destined for a Saudi offer. Emery prefers Moreno so it won't be him making way.
We will be taking care with wages so Digne going, and Lenglet who is an expensive stop gap returning to Barca, will free up a large chunk of funds.
Those 2 are £300-350k per week combined so we could probably get 3-4 good players for that.
Kamara is very important for us if he can stay fit but is also a pretty hefty wage. If we're going to miss him for 10-20 games every year then maybe it would be shrewd to look at alternatives, but he's not going to fetch good money this summer with his ACL injury.
