Evening all.
A lot to unpack from yesterdays game. Firstly, how nice it is to get one over on Utd. Only our 4th home win over them in the history of the PL, which is a ridiculous stat.

The standout for me at the moment is our knack of winning games which in the past we'd have drawn or, worse, lost. Yesterday being a prime example of that type of game (plus Leeds, plus West Ham, plus Spurs, plus Wolves.). We have grit, drive and character, and a belief. It isn't pretty all of the time, but you can see the players busting a gut for each other and busting a gut for Unai. Which is fantastic. And you can see us trying to find a way to win - key substitutions, tactical tweaks, changes when merited. Great!

Yesterday wasn't our best performance of the season, but it had all of what i've mentioned above. We dug in and saw it out. Rogers was a standout with his two sublime goals, but big shout out to Lindelhof who I think was superb. Rock solid and a calming presence. Kamara in contrast had one of his worst games of the season I think, but that's a minor blip i'm sure from one of our standout players.

The passing out from the bag makes me nervous to - and the risks are there to see in both the West Ham and Man U games. But, in fairness, we are clear on that being our style and we have courage to stick to it. And also in fairness, we did bomb a fair few long balls yesterday as well to mix it up.

Nine days to the transfer window, a couple more new faces are needed to keep the squad strong. But no idea on how many £'s we're allowed to spend

Just watched the United game again felt I had to as turning over Utd has to be savoured and enjoyed 😀. A great result the positives being the result itself, and Rogers goals, and the fact that the result was not achieved playing particularly well that's the mark of a good side in my view. However we do need to learn a few lessons firstly we are a little to predictable when we were playing out from the back whether that was because the confidence in Lindelof isn't as great as it is with Torres but we went the Konsa to Cash route far too often which made it easier for Utd to press us down that side and as a result we turned over possession far more in this game than in others we have played in. Secondly I am conflicted on the Digne v Maatsen debate, Maatsen is pacier and offers more going forward but defensively has a rick in him every now and again as Chelsea are likely to play with Garnacho and Neto I might be inclined to go with Digne a tough call but I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice. Finally I know we will continue to play with a high line that's integral to Emery's strategy but I do worry that with Lindelof we will be more susceptible to the ball over the top, whilst Torres isn't the quickest he is faster than Lindelof but we will see what happens. But irrespective of all that what a great time to be a Villa fan ⚽️✌️

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our posters on here and to the Eds too here's hoping for some great debates going into 2026.

I thought sesko done a great job in restricting us playing out to the left, every kick out he ran his socks off and cut off that route, tactically I thought Amorin done a good job setting up to stifle us, luckily for us he was missing quiet a few players. that said, any team that’s going to win something needs a bit of luck throughout the season.
There certainly was no luck involved in our goals, Roger’s finishing was out of this world, not only his 2 goals but that backheel early on skint the post, all the players around him deserve credit for it aswel, they are creating the space for him dragging the defenders wide so he can shoot, they just have to track the runners, teams are struggling with it.

we do need Watkins to score more of his chances, he plays a part in most of our play in the final third but he won’t be happy if he’s not getting a few. It’s a great time to be a Villa fan, how many Christmas’s over the years could we honestly say we have a realistic chance of 9 points against United Chelsea and Arsenal? We have come so far and this team has proved it can go up another gear or 2 if we get everyone ticking.

Just reading about the future of afcon. From 2028 they will have an annual league, Sept, Oct, Nov. Surely that means top European teams will avoid signing players from the African countries.

{Ed001's Note - the competition is only going to be every 4 years. The annual league is to be played during international breaks mate. The whole point of the new set up is to align African football's calendar with the European one. It will actually make it more likely African players get picked up if anything.}

Man U fans crying that they weren't beaten by Villa, it was Rogers . Over the years the times we've played them off the park, then they've managed to get a draw or a win . This today makes up for a lot of those days, didn't play well but beat them . Must admit they played better than I thought they would, but some of our sloppy play helped .

This playing out from the back, surely as pros, they realise there are times where you have to just launch it .Teams now have us sussed out and put that press on leaving us no where to go . UTV

I agree it's frustrating at times and there a certainly occasions when we gift the opposition a goal or chance, but the flip side of that coin is the risk and reward balance that has seen us achieve more consecutive wins than almost any other time in our history, so the evidence wouldn't suggest teams have found us out.

Dave match of the Day highlighted this problem and it is an issue, between them cash and Konsa give make me nervous every game. We will continue to concede sloppy goals if Emery doesn't address it. All the great work we do is spoilt by the silly and unnecessary goals we give away.

Our great run continues and not for the first time we did it by not playing well. We have managed to get away with our mistakes by winning, however this won't continue for ever so our sloppy play has to be addressed and I'm sure Emery is on the case. If anyone watched tonight's match of the day it highlighted how we were forced to get penned in on our right back positions and we definitely struggled to get out at times and the left wasn't a lot better. Man U stats apart from the goals were better than ours and we rode our luck. If we don't address the issues highlighted by our performances against, Wolves, West Ham Brighton Man U we will eventually lose games and non of us want that.

Our performances against Bournemouth and Arsenal were superb and we fully deserved our wins, I'm sure there are still a few on here that can still see no wrong but the honest faithful have to accept that we haven't been at our best in recent games including the two European games. Teams will look at the way Man U restricted us today and we can expect all teams to follow suit. We need to adapt our style to counter this. Third at Christmas was unimaginable after our poor start which is absolutely brilliant but we need to address the issues we still seem to have which eventually will leave us vulnerable to results going against us.

How many teams in the PL have done this in the last 2 seasons? Always finding something negative can't you just be happy for once in your life?

Agree1

It's definitely not meant to be negative daz, when things are glaringly obvious it's only right that they are taken in consideration in order to make us a better team and improve problems that might prevent us being our best possible team. If anyone is saying we have played consistently well in the last couple of months that are not watching the same football as me and many of my friends and family.

There is absolutely nothing disloyal commenting on matters that can effect how well we compete against other top contenders, especially if we are fighting for champions League places

Nobody is playing well every week. Arsenal have had multiple games where they haven't been anywhere near top gear but have found a way to win - apart from against us. Same for City.
We're over performing with the squad we have (especially considering Watkins form) but we need to be careful not to measure this team against an impossible standard.

Enjoy the ride and i'll say it again, keep level heads when performances/results aren't what we'd all like in an ideal world, which doesn't exist.

I must be watching differently then as we have won 10 on the bounce in all competitions. Try telling that to Man C Arsenal Liverpool Bayen PSG most in form team in the top 5 European leagues since September is no meant feat playing bad and still winning in probably 2 of them games is a sign of a good side .
