Ok, so with Barkley in our squad is now strong. If he and we have a good season and we can convince him to make his loan permanent at the end of the season I honestly believe that with one more quality centre back, left back, winger and striker ( sounds a lot I know but it's only 4 more players over January and next summer) our squad would be quality and capable of challenging for honours. It's a dream at the moment but every signing so far has taken us one step closer. VTID!

I think our owners have shown us all fully, their ambitions for our club. They have given our manager 100 % support in strengthening the squad last season bringing in the numbers and this time round adding quality. Not only that they have overhauled the academy system and I’ve lost count of the number of talented youngsters who have recently been taken on. So not only do we have good reasons to be optimistic for this season but also for the long term. While the current owners remain, I can only see our club going in one direction, onwards and upwards.
Long may they remain.

And so say all of us Mark, 👍👍😎.

Surely this has to be our line up.
To me that line up should make any team think hard about us.

Watkins

Grealish Barkley McGinn Traore

Luiz

Targett Mings Konsa Cash

Martinez

Bench: Steer, Hourihane, Davis,
Nakamba, Guilbert, Hause, Trez.

Good looking team, bench coming together also👌.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 16:32:01
Dave how about rose to come in for targett to complete that good line up.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 17:47:47
Like your team Dave, but who knows there may be a few more through the door to consider before the end of this window 🤞🏻. I noticed you haven’t got Jacob Ramsey on your bench, is the thinking that he will be loaned out.
I think we’ve already seen enough from young Ramsey to realize he could be very useful to us this season.
Personally, I would like to see him kept on, but with Ross Barkley’s arrival, a loan move may well be on the cards.
What does everybody else think?

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:07:39
Absolutely SV why not, we definitely need to do something about the left back position.
I would prefer either Guilbert or Elmo than Targett to be honest, there is room for thought.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:23:05
Yes Mark, I think we now have what we need in Midfield, and I see Ramsey as a starter next season, I think he may well be loaned out if and when we exit the cup.
On the bench I have named, you could only leave out Hourihane for Ramsey, not sure that would be welcomed mate.
Love Ramsey, and he will be a star, if loaned out I would be happier if he went to a top Championship side, ie Bournmouth, or Brentford or even Swansea.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:23:58
Like the looks of that team and the comment about danny rose I think he would be a very good signing if we can get him. Also the young lad from Denmark as further back up. Deano and Lange are definitely making quality signings to improve us further and further.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:46:28
Definitely keep him I think we have seen enough to continue his integration into first team duties particularly in the cup games and cameo appearances in the prem.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:50:31
That's a beautiful team Dave :-) Don't forget Wesley and Heaton will be back soon, add a striker / winger (King) to that team and it's a very strong side!

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:53:21
Let’s see if Engels plays tomorrow and does ok before buying a centre half, think the icing on the cake would be to get Josh King in for the £10M that’s been quoted and go with that till January, I’m expecting a top 10 finish now with Barkley coming in if we can keep the core of the team fit

UTV.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 18:58:52
I agree John if we could use him, Markfrance, Moose, and myself are advocates for youth, we always have been.
Its not easy to use everyone, what team would you field and where would Ramsey be in the bench set up?

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 19:30:39
Good looking line up Dave and a very strong bench agree about finding a space for Ramsey if he doesn't go on loan. Things are looking good and Barkley will be available for Sunday so a massive boost there. Oh by the way, is it too late to change our minds about the 5 subs rule, now we've got a bit of quality? 😂😂😂😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 19:40:20
On the face of it, I agree Dave, if we could guarantee keeping all our midfielders fit. Don’t want to be pessimistic but over the course of a season that’s unlikely.
If we do get our usual bad luck with injuries, then Ramsey could potentially have a big role to play.
However I accept that his development is important, and might be best served playing regularly for one of the better Championship teams. I think Deano will have a tough choice to make here.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 19:43:23
BK, I would not be surprised if King is a late addition mate.
And as you say Wesley and Heaton, blimey we are getting spoiled for choice.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 19:53:07
Where would you put him Mark, and at the expense who? don`t forget Wesley, Heaton and Engels are back soon, its difficult mate.
Like I have said to John we only have five subs, and like Moose has hinted, nine subs and we are laughing. 😂😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 20:14:05
Yes it’s ironic that the 9 sub rule would actually really benefit us.
I think if Jack gets injured Dave, God forbid, then Ramsey could perhaps be a good back up.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 20:16:53
Hi Dave,
Following Konsa's performance on Monday I have put the boots back in the shed.
Hopefully for ever. He kept Mitrovic quiet and that is difficult.
We seem to be moving forward quite quickly with the pieces fitting together.
Soon the jigsaw will be complete.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 20:22:54
Absolutely mate, no question.
But we hope and pray that won`t happen, but who would you leave off the bench, or better still what would your bench be? in the case of the team above.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 20:49:17
I think the bench could change accordingly to who we are playing and circumstances regarding the fitness levels of our first choice 11.
For instance if Deano knew Jack was carrying a knock, then putting Ramsey on the bench might make sense.
I think we will need to rotate things to some extent in any case, to keep things fresh and make the whole squad feel they’ve all got a part to play.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 20:51:46
Hi Oldvillan
Great shout, and I agree with you mate, Konsa was real good.
I think he might be developing into that ass kicker we have been looking for.
Still keep your boots in a safe place though OV, you never know.
Its all looking good mate 😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 21:03:28
That makes good sense Mark, that`s one way round it.
Well that being the case, it would be reasonable to keep him at VP.
Glad they are not my decisions.
I feel like I have been round the block mate 😂😂😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 21:18:35
Targett gets too much stick. He’s mainly a decent option. imo better than Rose. He just needs to up his concentration as his weakness is ball-watching at times. But he’s good going forward, has a great understanding with Jack too. If we bring in a LB it should be a high quality young player to put more pressure on Targett and replace Taylor. I’m sorry but Guilbert is just not a better option at LB! He has terrible positioning, and can’t cross from the right, never mind the left. His recovery pace and love of a tackle make him look better than he is. Cash has already shown how much a better player he is, and there’s a reason Fred is third choice. I love the bloke. bit like Engels. but just don’t think they’re the required standard.

Also. I get the love for JJ. Boy has looked class in the Carabao, and great to see him make his debut. But best thing for him is to go on loan and get a full season in the championship. He came on so much from that short spell at Doncaster, and if he goes and gets regular games he’ll be ready to play a big role next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 21:25:39
Dave I like your first team I think it’s spot on, in answer to your question re how I would use Ramsey I would alternate Ramsey and Hourihane on the bench probably using Hourihane in the games against the bigger clubs and Ramsey in the others. As markdavfrance says he also gives us injury cover if required. Whilst I like Hourihane he is not going to be a regular this season and I think his contract is up in the summer and given his age I would be surprised if he extended as he is going to want regular first team football I would have thought therefore better to start to get Ramsey used to premiership football now.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 22:01:22
John, I like Ramsey a lot mate, and rotating him and Hourihane sounds great in theory, and I would go along with that.
But somehow I could not see Hourihane tolerating a rotating bench with Ramsey at this stage of his career.
As I said to Mark, great if it could be done.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 22:34:04
Dave, I know this might sound harsh but if he can’t tolerate it then he can go in January, Lansbury is going to sit tight until next summer, so if necessary we can use him as back up. Who knows some of the other youngsters might have started to come through by then.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 23:30:08
Very true John, its not harsh its how it is, reality.

30 Sep 2020 14:22:40
Oh joy of joys.
We are starting to look like we mean business.
Still need a strong centre half to back up Mings and Konsa.
Konsa looking like a bargain. Strong on the deck and in the air.
Could we now get the elusive Benrahima in and get him paired with Watkins? Played together for a couple of years and know each others moves.
Obviously our new man Lange? is doing the work that our previous transfer guy failed to do.
Our owners are what we asked for.
They want what we want.
A successful team fighting for a place at the top table.

30 Sep 2020 15:08:27
I can’t see Benrahma happening with Barkley coming Jack will play left and Traore right meaning no place for Benrahma I think we will sign either a centre back or centre forward although personally I think we desperately need a quality left back.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 16:35:00
I think you're spot on with what our front three will be, but if I were a betting man I'd say one more forward will be coming in. It might sound greedy, but I think Smith would ideally like to have the option of rotating three genuine threats from the flanks. Trezeguet is a workhorse but if we're 1-0 down and chasing a game or we get an injury I'd think Smith would want to get a Rashica/ Sarr type player to have genuine competition and impact options. This condensed season is going to need rotation and depth. Liking how our business is coming along though!

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 16:49:42
Completely agree John. I don’t think we’ve seriously considered Benrahma as we seemed to be after versatile, pacey forwards who can play wide or central (Traore signed, and linked with Sarr, King, Rashica, Edouard) . For all the clamour for Benrahma and Buendia, they always felt more like back up options to Jack if he went. He did say before signing that contract it was 50-50. Deano also made it clear that he sees Jack playing from the left, and Barkley coming in cements that.

I think we’ll still be looking at a versatile defensive player - Nelsson makes a lot of sense, and another forward. But maybe it’ll be a loan signing up top. There are growing rumours, far-fetched as they may be, about Diego Costa. A loan for him would be sensational.

30 Sep 2020 12:58:20
Remember all that "Dean Smith can't attract quality players" "Jobs too big for him" "we've had the worse window in the league" from around a fortnight ago, can't really hear them anymore, wonder what happened?

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 13:17:20
Serious business Chris, can't recall a better transfer window - Smith deserves massive credit, I've been a critic of his but he has really turned things around post lockdown. Now if we can get a striker in, Diego Costa anybody Ha Ha?

Also worth noting the business we are doing in the academy, the future is really bright under our new owners!

I’d say JT have more influence in the Barkley one but fair play to everyone looking good!

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 16:52:55
Not according to his interview. He’s mentioned JT but specifically said how Dean has convinced him to join because how he wants to use him and his plans for the season. It’s brilliant that Barkley is mates with Grealish (honestly, he must be the most liked guy in football), great that Tammy told him how much he loved it here, and JT is another pull. but Deano has swung it.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 11:29:54
I think this is a stellar signing, he definitely has class, I think this is going to enhance Jack's game with quality by his side and take some of the pressure off him. I'm sure if he shows his class this will help his claim to a regular england spot. Well done Villa and probably JT has used his relationship with Chelsea. If we can get centre back and left back cover I think we will be satisfied this transfer window may be beeing a tad gready another quality forward would be the icing. But let's not get too gready.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 14:13:01
I still want Benrahma in - and although I know nothing about Nelsson, I think another CB would be good.

I'd also play Trez as out and out striker when Watkins not playing. Trez was the best finisher we had last year, he got int he right places a lot last year and that was from the wing, for me he is worth a crack at striker. Then Wesley fit from January to see what he can do. I think that will get us through this year.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Sep 2020 14:59:48
Yep scot lb or cb is the essential for me. We have enough upfront when wes is fit ok no recognised left winger but plenty to fill in the position but targett needs pushing for his place and the cb cover we have probably isn't strong enough take axel on loan again please 👐🏻.

Well after the papers saying Barkley is staying, Villa want Loftus-Cheek, in walks Barkley!

Great signing, think in the long term he replaces Hourihane in our midfield 3. Makes the bench stronger, as Hourihane is effective from there.
